À la fin du Premier Empire, plusieurs centaines d’étrangers étaient enfermés au bagne de Rochefort, considérés comme dangereux, car ils avaient bravé l’occupation française jusqu’à la révolte armée dans certains pays.

Towards the end of the first Empire (1814), hundreds of non-French convicts were detained in the labour camp prison of Rochefort. They were considered dangerous after standing up in arms against the French occupants in several countries of Europe, especially in Spain.
